Farm Africa works with teachers to create engaging Africa-themed lesson plans for autumn

To help connect schoolchildren with the lives of African children thousands of miles away, Farm Africa has worked with teachers to create a wealth of highly engaging downloadable resources and lesson plans for Key Stages 1 and 2 as part of its annual Give Hunger the Boot fundraising appeal.

As well as Africa-themed lesson plans across Maths, Science, English and Geography, there are also additional resources like colouring-in sheets, photos and a video that can be used by teachers to make their lessons even more interactive and engaging.

Farm Africa is extremely grateful to teachers who have volunteered their time to help produce lesson plans and resources that are as relevant and engaging as possible for pupils across the UK.

Explaining why she got involved in preparing lessons, primary school teacher Vicky Baker said:

“As a teacher myself, it was important to me to design resources that would be exciting and easy for fellow teachers to use. The Give Hunger the Boot materials provide a range of practical cross-curricular lessons and resources to support African led topics and global learning themes within your school. These resources will enable children to develop a wider understanding of the different lives of those within Africa whilst encouraging values of respect and citizenship. As a teacher, I feel it is important that we help children to grow and develop, valuing diversity and understanding the world’s bigger picture’

UK schools to get their wellies on for Africa-themed welly walks this autumn

This year the centrepiece of Give Hunger the Boot for schoolswill bethe Great African Welly Walk. Farm Africa is encouraging hundreds of schools across the UK to get their wellies on this autumn term for a huge sponsored welly walkaround Africa to help end hunger in Africa.

Taking part in the Great African Welly Walk couldn’t be easier with no plane tickets or passports required! All that’s needed is for schools and their pupils to organise a route for their sponsored welly walks – and heaps of enthusiasm! No walk is too short – schools can walk round their playground, across school fields or go on a cross-country stroll.

Teachers and pupils can track their school’s welly miles via the Farm Africa online Welly Miles Tracker, by adding their welly miles and downloading a personalised certificate. And with more schools taking part in Give Hunger the Boot each year, Farm Africa has big ambitions that the total number of welly miles walked will be enough for a walk right around Africa, that’s 16,000 miles!

The charity has also prepared a colourful pack full of engaging resources for the classroom. These include a Great African Welly Walk poster containing a map of Africa covered in fascinating facts about the continent for the classroom, colourful case-studies and lots of extra fundraising ideas. Explaining why her school supported Give Hunger the Boot last year, PTA member at Holy Trinity Primary School, Jennie Meadows said:

Holy Trinity Primary School is delighted to be supporting Farm Africa through the High Weald Welly Walk and other fundraising activities.  Families have turned out in force.  It's great for the children to understand about the food challenges facing people in rural Africa and the opportunities for lifelong change that can be brought about by African people being able to get the best from their land and feed their families for good.”
