Berkshire couple open up Hungerford farm to help tackle global hunger

Bill Acworth talks about the plants on his farm at last year's Open Day

A Berkshire couple are working to ensure that an open day on their Hungerford farm this Sunday raises as much money as possible to help tackle one of the world’s most pressing problems: hunger.

Each year Bill and Sue Acworth open up their beautiful Little Hidden Farm to the public to raise money for the British charity, Farm Africa. Hunger kills more people each year than AIDS, TB and Malaria combined. Farm Africa is providing invaluable training and technical support to smallholder farmers in eastern Africa so they can sustainably grow more food for their families and communities, not just this harvest but well into the future.

Bill and Sue are long-term supporters of Farm Africa’s work to provide sustainable, long-term solutions to hunger. They have held their annual open day fundraiser for the last nine years, raising almost £10,000 for Farm Africa in the process. Last year’s open day alone raised £1,320.

This year’s Little Hidden Farm Day

Bill and Sue’s open day will take place on Sunday 7 July at Little Hidden Farm, Newtown near Hungerford. The day will run from 10.30am - 4pm.

Bill describes the annual event as “a great day out for the family”. There will be a morning farm walk, starting at about 11am, where guests will be led through the farm's stunningly beautiful wild-flower meadows. And during afternoon workshops families will be able to get hands-on experience in a whole range of crafts including natural wool dyeing, basket-making, clay and chalk sculpture and modelling, and clay oven building. There'll also be live music and the chance to have a go playing African drums. And best of all, guests will be able to feast on delicious, locally produced food from the farm. All proceeds go to Farm Africa.
