Sponsored Welly Walks to help UK schools end hunger in Africa
14 June 2013
Thousands of schools across the UK urged to get their wellies on this Autumn
A leading British charity is calling on thousands of schools across the UK to ‘get their wellies on’ this Autumn and help Give Hunger the Boot in Africa.
Farm Africa is a different kind of charity, working to tackle hunger in Africa before it becomes an emergency. It has just sent out its annual schools fundraising pack which is brimming with ideas for sponsored school events as well as engaging lesson plans and other teaching resources.
The pack is designed to inspire schoolchildren, parents and teachers to put their best boot forward this Autumn by taking part in a mass UK-wide Welly Walk. The Welly Walk is a unique challenge for UK schools to collectively walk all the way to one of Farm Africa’s projects thousands of miles away in Kenya. And back!
Farm Africa’s interactive map shows schools their contribution to the Great African Welly Walk
Feedback from schools, teachers and pupils after last year’s Welly Walks was overwhelmingly positive. So, to help make Welly Walks even more fun this year, Farm Africa has created an interactive map on its website where schools can plot their own ‘welly miles’ and see how far UK schools still have to go in the collective Welly Walk. All a school needs to do is log in via http://greatafricanwellywalk.org/ and add the school name and number of welly miles walked before printing off a personalised certificate showing the stretch of the 14,000 km route walked by the school.
Key Stages 1 and 2 Lesson Plans for teachers
And teachers will be delighted to hear that we have created some highly engaging lesson plans for Key Stages 1 and 2 in Maths, Science, English and other subjects too. These plans are designed to be both fun and to help connect UK schoolchildren to Africa and issues of hunger.
How can my school set up a Welly Walk?
Setting up a Welly Walk could not be more simple. The walks can be as long or short as a school wants. All schools need to do is plan a sponsored Welly Walk for next Autumn term. Each school’s total of welly miles is then added to the collective total from other schools taking part. The welly miles soon add up and, before you know it, UK schools have walked to Kenya and back, raising thousands of pounds in the process for Farm Africa’s life-changing work.
